Tecnologia de asfalto-borracha está sendo desenvolvida na Bahia
Cientistas baianos estudam métodos de desenvolvimento de um material chamado asfalto-borracha, que apresenta características superiores ao asfalto convencional. Os objetivos das pesquisas são avaliar as propriedades do asfalto-borracha desenvolvido em laboratório e contribuir para a aplicação desta tecnologia de utilização da borracha de pneus em misturas asfálticas para produzir pavimentos mais duráveis, além de minimizar o problema da disposição de pneus velhos em locais inadequados. O aproveitamento de pneus inutilizados em obras de engenharia está se tornando uma boa alternativa, desde que o Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente (CONAMA), através da resolução nº258/99, obrigou os produtores e importadores de pneus a coletá-los e colocá-los em locais ambientalmente adequados. Além disso, ficou estabelecido que a partir de 2005, para cada quatro pneus produzidos, cinco deverão ser reciclados, como uma forma de reduzir o passivo ambiental.
De acordo com resultados da pesquisa rodoviária de 2004 da Confederação Nacional do Transporte (CNT), que avalia a situação das estradas brasileiras, 80% das rodovias em piores condições de tráfego, estão localizadas no Nordeste brasileiro. Ainda de acordo com a pesquisa, 52,2% da extensão das estradas (o que corresponde a 23.667 km) encontra-se com pavimentos em estado deficiente, ruim ou péssimo. Qualquer pessoa que viaje de carro pelas rodovias baianas deve ter passado por situações de risco devido aos buracos, trincas ou até falta de pavimentação em alguns trechos. Na Bahia, há trechos que estão em estado de deterioração tão grave, que os ônibus e caminhões têm que trafegar a 10 km/h, o que facilita a ação de quadrilhas especializadas em roubo de carga. A pesquisa da CNT afirma que, dos 430.655,6 km de estradas federais nordestinas, apenas 41.763 km são pavimentados. A falta de um programa de conservação das estradas e o asfalto de má qualidade que foi aplicado na maioria das estradas são as principais causas de degradação das rodovias em todo país. A incorporação de borracha na liga asfáltica é a menina dos olhos de ecologistas e engenheiros empenhados em dar um destino útil às montanhas de pneus velhos armazenados em locais inadequados. Segundo a Associação de Indústria dos Pneumáticos (ANIP), no Brasil são colocados no mercado aproximadamente 61 milhões de pneus por ano, sendo que pelo menos 50% dos pneus produzidos anualmente estão sendo descartados e dispostos em locais impróprios. O Laboratório de Pavimentação (LABPAV), da Universidade Salvador (UNIFACS), é um dos pioneiros no Brasil, juntamente com a Petrobrás e universidades a desenvolver estudos na área de pavimentação e incorporação de borracha moída de pneus em misturas asfálticas. A Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), a Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), a Universidade Estadual de Maringá (UEM) e a Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC) são alguns dos centros de pesquisas que já desenvolveram esta tecnologia no Brasil. “As pesquisas têm o objetivo de desenvolver novas tecnologias e novos produtos a serem empregados na cadeia produtiva do asfalto nas regiões Norte e Nordeste”, afirma Sandra Oda, doutora em Infra-estrutura e Transportes e coordenadora de projetos do Departamento de Engenharia e Arquitetura (DEAR), da UNIFACS. Ainda segundo a professora, “o resultado das pesquisas possibilitará a formação de uma competência local capaz de propor soluções aos problemas particulares destas regiões”.
Processo de fabricação
O processo de fabricação, resumidamente, consiste na mistura de cimento asfáltico e borracha moída a uma temperatura que vai de 150 a 200ºC, durante um determinado tempo (20 a 120 min). Essa mistura é classificada como uma reação e forma um composto chamado asfalto-borracha (asfalt-rubber), com propriedades de melhor desempenho que as do asfalto convencional. “O resultado é um produto que tem uma maior flexibilidade, apresenta maior resistência às deformações e trincas, reduz o ruído, possui uma drenagem melhor, maior resistência às variações de temperatura, além de reduzir os custos com atividades de manutenção e reabilitação”, afirma Oda. Como resultado prático da pesquisa, em dezembro de 2004, um trecho da Avenida General Graça Lessa, no Ogunjá, bairro situado na cidade de Salvador, foi pavimentado com o asfalto-borracha desenvolvido no Laboratório de Pavimentação (LABPAV). O empreendimento contou com o auxílio de bolsistas da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa na Bahia (FAPESB), que através de programas como PRODOC, Infra-estrutura, Apoio Regular à Pesquisa e apoio à realização de reunião científica fomenta cinco dos seis projetos em execução no LABPAV. “O fomento em pesquisas é muito importante para a execução de idéias engavetadas, que quando se encontram em condições favoráveis, faz com que a nossa capacidade inovadora de nós, estudantes, cresça cada vez mais”, argumentou Joad Teixeira, bolsista da FAPESB no LABPAV.
História
A primeira aplicação de asfalto-borracha foi realizada numa rua da cidade de Phoenix, nos Estados Unidos. A população, em geral, não imaginaria que o invento de Charles H. McDonald, em 1963, seria uma das melhores soluções para as montanhas de pneus dispostos inadequadamente em aterros, rios e ao longo das estradas. De 1963 até o início da década de 90, cerca de 16 mil quilômetros de rodovias já foram pavimentadas com asfalto-borracha nos Estados Unidos. Esse número deve-se à Lei sobre a Eficiência de Transporte Intermodal de Superfície, de 1991, que obriga os Departamentos de Transportes Estaduais (DOTs) e a Agência de Proteção Ambiental (EPA) a desenvolver, em conjunto, estudos para utilizar pneus na construção de pavimentos asfálticos. Dados do Departamento de Infra-estrutura de Transportes da Bahia (DERBA) afirmam que o desgaste das Rodovias Estaduais tem se acelerado de forma vertiginosa ao longo dos últimos anos, contribuindo para o aumento do custo de manutenção e o conseqüente custo operacional dos veículos que ali trafegam. Ao comparar o incentivo à pesquisa na área de pavimentos asfálticos de países desenvolvidos com o Brasil, a professora Sandra Oda afirma que os investimentos no campo são poucos, principalmente na Bahia. “Se a Bahia tem as piores estradas, é por falta de pesquisa”, constata Oda. Apesar das inúmeras vantagens do asfalto-borracha, ainda não existe um interesse direto da prefeitura local e do Estado em utilizar essa tecnologia em nível industrial nas pavimentações das ruas e estradas. “O que se vê são organismos rodoviários e prefeituras realizando atividades de manutenção e reabilitação de pavimentos à margem das recomendações técnicas”, relata Oda. “Aqui em Salvador, a Prefeitura está pavimentando avenidas com material de baixa qualidade. A população apelidou o asfalto de ‘sonrisal’, por ele se desfazer com as chuvas”. Ela afirma que essa situação é ainda mais agravada quando se trata da pavimentação da periferia. Diante de todas as dificuldades, os estudantes de engenharia, que hoje são pesquisadores-bolsistas, acreditam que num futuro próximo, haverá uma maior conscientização das equipes que compõem os quadros de secretarias ligadas às pavimentações asfálticas. “Acredito que as pessoas ligadas a esse setor, que fazem parte de organismos públicos e privados, estarão mais abertas a investir em parcerias com universidades e centros de pesquisa”, afirma Erick Sampaio, estudante da UNIFACS. “Estamos fazendo a nossa parte que é a de buscar soluções”, complementa.
